The final boards were made before the characters and art direction were finalized. I had to improvise the character designs, as they were not finalized until one week after the final deadline. It should also be noted that the film originally was meant to have two different styles. The first half was a more comic book style, with the second half more Disney-like. This got scrapped in production, but the shots remained.
